Deuteronomy 31: 6 Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the Lord your God who goes with you; he will not fail you or forsake you.”
Be Strong, Bold, Without Fear or Dread
One of the most difficult challenges in life is to maintain our confidence, particularly in a time of uncertainty. In the best of circumstances we are living with a degree of uncertainty – uncertainty about our financial situation, uncertainty about our health, uncertainty about love and relationships. Uncertainty and fear of the future are not new. When Moses, the great leader of the Jewish people, was about to die, at 120 years of age, he told the people four things: Be strong, be bold, have no fear or dread because the Lord God will not fail or forsake you.
The assurance and promise of Moses should be good news for us today. I know that in my life, this is what gives me confidence and strength to face the dawning of each new day. When Moses gives this promise to the people of Israel, the future could well seem uncertain. For 40 years, while wandering in the wilderness, God led the people with a pillar of fire at night and a cloud of smoke by day. God fed the people with mana in the morning and quail in the evening. In a sense, their lives were simple. God literally gave them everything they needed to survive. The only requirement was faithfulness and devotion.
With Moses nearing death, the people were not sure what would come next. God spoke directly to Moses. From his 80th year until he was 120 years of age, Moses had led the people with faithfulness and strength. The promise of God though Moses as he neared his death, was that God would raise up another leader who would take the people over the River Jordan to the promised land. The leader to succeed Moses would be Joshua.
In like manner, God will never leave you without a witness. We want to live forever on earth, but the reality is that our time hear is limited. We are only travelers on the sea of time. We lay a foundation for others to follow and build upon. Our challenge is to do the best with what God has given us, then we turn it over to the next generation.
I encourage you to follow the words of Moses – Be Bold, live your life without fear or dread of the future, and believe in the promise of God never to leave, forsake, or fail you!
Questions for Reflection:
- What are your thoughts about the promise of Moses?
- What gives you the greatest fear?
- Where do you find hope in Jesus Christ?
- Other thoughts on the promise of Moses?
Prayer: Lord, help me to face this day. Grant me strength to face my fears. Grant me hope to survive and to thrive, not only in this life, but in the life to come. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
